Hanging out with actor Ted Raimi
Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Kevin David Anderson is a genre-bending author known for his witty blend of horror, comedy, and pop culture. His breakout novel, Night of the Living Trekkies, about a zombie-infested Star Trek convention, earned critical acclaim, including a starred review from Publishers Weekly and a spot on the Washington Post's top five zombie novels of 2010. This cult classic, along with Anderson's follow-up, Night of the ZomBEEs, were required reading in several college courses, most notably How to Survive Your Freshman Year by Studying the Zombie Apocalypse at The University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. For more on this, read the Press Enterprise article: How an Inland Author's Zombie books wound up used in college classes.
Anderson's storytelling prowess extends beyond novels. His short stories have been published worldwide, on all continents (excluding Antarctica - mostly because penguins don't read), appearing in numerous anthologies, magazines, podcasts, and radio dramas. His work has garnered recognition, including becoming the first American to be published in the award-winning South African Horror Magazine, Something Wicked, and inclusion in Bram Stoker-nominated anthologies. Many of his tales have been adapted into audio productions featuring renowned voice actors. His first stage play, Midnight Call, was performed in 2024 in Colorado by the spooky folks at One Night Stand Theater.
Anderson's popular characters, Earl and Dale - a pair of middle-aged truckers battling supernatural forces - hit the road in his 2019 collection, Midnight Men: The Supernatural Adventures of Earl and Dale, published by Grinning Skull Press. These gritty, humorous tales were originally captivating audiences on the Horror Hill Podcast read by Jason Hill. Anderson expanded his audio universe into print once again with Night Sounds: From Podcast to Print (2022), a collection of short stories previously featured on podcasts like The Drabblecast, Pseudopod, the Simply Scary, and The NoSleep Podcast.
Anderson got to meet one of his creative heroes in 2010 - George A. Romero, the Godfather of the Modern Zombie Film Genre
When not crafting chilling or comical narratives, Anderson enjoys spending time with family, exploring horror conventions and book festivals, and indulging his passion for geeky humor. Teaming up with his son, he wrote his first joke book, The Geektastic Joke Book for Kids, under the pseudonym Giggles A. Lott and Nee Slapper. His son has moved on to more serious pursuits (college), but Anderson has expanded the Joke Book series with STAR WARS: The Jokes Awaken and Jurassic Jokes: A Joke Book 65 million Years in the Making. Before embarking on a writing career, Anderson honed his communication skills with a B.A. in Mass Communication from Fresno State and a successful decade in marketing. He currently works as a teacher for students with special needs.
2025 marked a milestone year with the release of my fifth book, Try Not to Die in Roswell and Beyond, a "choose-your-own-adventure" collaboration with Mark Tullius. The book resonated with readers, peaking at #2 on the Amazon Best-Sellers list for Teen & Young Adult Interactive Adventure.
My short fiction and poetry also found homes in several notable collections. I contributed two flash fiction pieces to the WATG Press debut anthology, Outsider Monsters, and saw my first poem, "Nightmare," published in Gathered Here Today. Additionally, a revamped version of my short story, "The Box Born Wraith," was featured in the wildfire relief charity anthology Dread Coast, alongside acclaimed authors such as Scott Sigler and Jonathan Maberry.
A new audio version of my short story, The Day Hypnotism Died, was produced by YouTuber, writer, artist, Datt MfManiels. The story has been done in audio before, but the new production feels fresh and is a multi-cast production.
In early 2025 the Website Top Sci-Fi Reads put out their list of the best 24 zombie books: A List of Must-Have Zombie Novels, and yes, one of my books made the list. My first novel, Night of the Living Trekkies, is #6. The list also includes notable authors and icons like George A. Romero, Stephen King, Max Brooks, and Jonathan Maberry.
Midsummer Scream 2025 - Hanging out with John Penney, author and screenwriter - Return of the Living Dead 3, The Kindred, Hellgate
In 2025, I participated in two online interviews, sharing the stories behind my recent work. I sat down with NewInBooks to discuss the inspiration and themes of my novel, Try Not To Die in Roswell and Beyond, and I also spoke with WATG Press for their featured series on the authors behind OUTSIDER MONSTERS, their debut flash fiction anthology—you can read that conversation [here].
2025 was a busy year for events, headlined by my annual appearance at Midsummer Scream in Long Beach. It was a thrill to connect with the Southern California writing community—most notably John Penney, the screenwriter behind the horror classic Return of the Living Dead 3. Beyond the convention floor, I enjoyed meeting readers at local staples like In Bloom Bookery in Temecula, the Spookey Night Market, and the Belmont Shore Book Fair.
